Hello! I am Rae, Licensed Clinical Social Worker and if you are here reading this then you are probably someone that is asking themselves if they need to get their child into therapy. Hopefully after reading this post, you will be one step closer to your answer.

Reasons for therapy

Many people seek out therapy for a variety of reasons: grief, trauma, unexpected life change, or just experiencing an overall low mood. Adults charged with raising little humans may be seeking therapy services due to these reasons, but also could be due to behavior concerns. These concerns could be a life-long issue that adults were hoping the child would grow out of, or it could be sudden. A pediatrician could have recommended therapy or if the child is having issues at school, then they could have made the recommendation as well. When families enter my office, some are able to clearly articulate their reasons for being there, others struggle to find the words. Listed below are some of the reasons that have been given to me over the years.

There are plenty of times when a child that enters my office does not share a reason for being in therapy. Or, their only reason is because their adult told them to come. The latter cases can be more difficult, as therapy does not work for someone who feels there is nothing in their life that needs to change. If this is your familyโ€™s case, then I suggest you consider family therapy as that may be more beneficial.ย Whatever your and your familyโ€™s reasons for therapy, make sure you communicate those reasons to the therapist. Your goals for therapy will determine the course of treatment. To read more about the types of therapy that can occur in a session, click on the link at the bottom of the page.

Conclusion

There should be no shame in deciding to try therapy. We as humans, need help from medical providers when our body is struggling. It should be no different when our mind in struggling. If for any reason you need help, I urge you to seek out assistance. To find a provider near you, go to https://www.psychologytoday.com/us.
