What is World Mental Health Day?

World Mental Health Day was created to raise awareness of mental health issues around the world. It is also to increase efforts of mental health support.

The first theme for WMH Day was created in 1994 at the suggestion of then Secretary-General Eugene Brody.

As a mental health provider, I love this Day. Every day should be dedicated to one’s mental health, but this Day is dedicated to a global awareness and support for something that so many struggle with.

Who Created WMH Day?

The World Federation for Mental Health created WMH Day in 1992.

The Federation was founded in 1948 with involvement from 46 countries. Now there are members from over 90 countries.

The Federation lists it goals as

  • To heighten public awareness about the importance of mental health and to gain understanding and improve attitudes about mental disorders
  • To promote mental health and prevent mental disorders
  • To improve the care, treatment and recovery of people with mental disorders.

Activities for World Mental Health Day

To celebrate World Mental Health Day and spread awareness, WFMH has created a toolkit that you can easily download here.

The toolkit discusses campaigns you can start, gives examples of demonstrations and has a link for donations.

You can also post on social media about World Mental Health Day. The toolkit offers slogans and hashtags you can use.

Want to celebrate World Mental Health Day? Tweet or post “It is time to focus on Workplace Wellness” with #MentalHealthintheWorkplace or #WMHD2024.

Want to spread awareness at work? Make signs with the hashtags provided in the toolkit or simply remind your coworkers about the day.

You can also purchase some stickers through my link here that spread mental health awareness. Who doesn’t love stickers?

Take some time during your work day to acknowledge your mental health. Do a 5-minute breathing exercise. Stand up and stretch. Drink some water. Do whatever you need.
